US Tariffs Live: Trump Threatens Higher Rates on India Over Russian Oil, Kremlin Calls the Move Illegal

🇺🇸 Trump Raises Stakes: Tariff Threats Against India

U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited trade tensions by threatening to significantly raise tariffs on Indian goods.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump accused India of profiting from Russian oil trade, claiming that New Delhi is purchasing large volumes of discounted crude from Moscow and reselling it on global markets:

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil … They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.”

The announcement comes amid a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump’s statement suggests current tariffs, already at 25%, could increase drastically in the coming days.

India’s Firm Response: “We Won’t Bow to Pressure”

New Delhi quickly hit back, calling the U.S. move unreasonable and unjustified.
Indian officials stressed that the country’s energy security cannot be compromised due to external political pressure. They also pointed out the double standards of Western nations that continue trade with Russia while criticizing India.

Despite mounting U.S. pressure, Indian sources have confirmed the country will continue purchasing Russian oil to stabilize domestic fuel prices and ensure economic stability.

Kremlin Reacts: “The Threat is Illegal”

Moscow wasted no time in responding. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned Trump’s comments, labeling them illegal and an attempt to coerce sovereign nations:

  • “We hear many statements that are in fact threats, attempts to force countries to cut trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legal.”
  • “Sovereign countries have the right to choose their trade partners … trade and economic cooperation should be in the interests of a particular country.”

Why This Matters

This standoff is more than just a tariff dispute—it’s a reflection of:

  • Energy Diplomacy: India’s reliance on Russian oil as a strategic energy source.
  • US Trade Policy: Trump’s aggressive approach to leverage tariffs for geopolitical goals.
  • Global Repercussions: Potential strain on U.S.–India ties, which could impact trade, defense cooperation, and investment flows.
